Mum and I at the Wigwam. I think this was quite near Joburg and we went there in Jan 1953.
This photo was taken on the roof at Atlantic Court shortly before I started at Twist St school. I was very unimpressed that there was no desk for me to sit at and I had to sit on a cushion on the floor. The school was right near Joubert Park and had an asphalt playing ground. If you fell over your knees would get it! I had realised that I could not run but I was encouraged to join in. It was just that I was not interested in sports. My forte was reading and especially English literature. I suppose I was a bit of a mummy's boy having been an only child and I was certainly very innocent! What I did have was a bright smile and an interest in the world and people although at this stage I was a but reserved and shy.
Here I am on a horse at the Wigwam, I was saddesore from hanging on so hard so never tried that again!
