Norwich

page 57 Dad reveals that they probably only had the money for  one direction. It took him five and a half months to get a passage back for them. How they must have missed each other! Don't forget they had been apart for most of the War. We went to Norwich to visit Aunt Alice who we all loved. We also visited Aunt May and Aunt Gladys and I remember a trip to Great Yarmouth. Somebody gave me a magnificent aeroplane made of wood with propellors. This was in a huge crate. Needless to say when we docked at Cape Town the customs insisted on opening the crate. Then we were on the train to Joburg and splendid welcome home party. Gareth Leyman proceeded to rip the propellors off my plane and announce that I now had a jet! He was not rebuked by his parents. Mum was very unimpressed. Dad comments that I was a little strange when we came back but I soon settled down again. I suppose I had grown up without grandparents and a series of aunties and uncles who were not of course related. I had now seen England for myself instead of just though books and films (which painted a glossy picture despite the rationing and climate!).
