Godson

Page 177 Bet and Len Cherry Hermanus. Len had been in the Salvation Army and sang bass at St Mark's. He became an Anglican and they were both ordained. They had 3 girls and Jonathan and I became his godfather. I have a photo of him. Sadly we lost touch and all later attempts to contact them failed. I can remember Len at a dinner in their home remarking on the colour of his underpants! I can't think why? Dad describes preparations for their trip in 1984 and Dennis was to make his first communion while they were in London. All the children went to St Chad's school. Miss Pedretti was a lovely head and she believed in educating the whole person. Mrs Cohen was a different matter and I once told her Liz was scared of her! I think the school was quite small and cosy and maybe it did nor prepare well for the big high school. Later on I became much more involved playing the piano for Masses and assemblies. I well remember the once a week collection from school. Wednesdays had a definite pattern organ practice with one or two children in tow, delivering bundles of free papers to distributors. I think it was great that I had that time with each child and we had lots of fun. Bedtime stories were also important and I often sang "Speed bonny boat" to them. They would wait up for my return demanding to know what books I had brought. Sadly Bruce was never a great reader. His skills were more on the practical side.
